People with disabilities are\nincreasingly present in the general population\nand are frequent users of various types of\nservices, including educational, social, and\nhealthcare services. Healthcare professionals,\nincluding nurses, play an important role in\nensuring a better quality of life for people\nwith disabilities. However, research findings\nare mostly based on the experiences of people\nwith disabilities themselves and their\nfamilies, while less attention has been paid to\nthe experiences of healthcare staff in\nproviding healthcare services to this\npopulation.<br> <br>\nThe aim of this paper was to\nreview the literature in order to highlight the\nimportance and role of nurses in providing\nservices to people with disabilities, as well as\nto identify the main barriers and challenges in\nthis process. The literature search was\nconducted using relevant databases (Google\nScholar, SCIndeks, ERIH Plus, and\nSCOPUS). The literature was searched in\nboth Serbian and English using appropriate\nkeywords, and papers published within the last 15 years were taken into consideration. <br><br>\n\nThe conclusions of a large number of studies\nindicate that nurses experience difficulties in\ncommunicating with people with disabilities\nand do not always feel comfortable when\nproviding healthcare services. In addition, it\nwas emphasized that they are not sufficiently\nprepared to work with this population.
